"The vast majority of God’s people in the assembly are not familiar with words of the new missal like ‘ineffable,’ ‘consubstantial,’ ‘incarnate,’ ‘inviolate,’ ‘oblation,’ ‘ignominy,’ ‘precursor,’ ‘suffused’ and ‘unvanquished.’ The vocabulary is not readily understandable by the average Catholic,” Bishop Trautman said. - Source

I know what all of those words mean - but for those who may not, the Church offers instruction in the faith through innovations such as the Catechism and religious education, which includes RCIA, priest's homilies and so on. Authentic doctrine is contained in slavishly accurate translations.
I also got a book when I was about 6 - it's called the "Webbbbbsterrrr's Diiiiiccccttttiiooooonnnnarrrrry."

I am so weary of the dumbing down of America and the attitude that we must sink to the level of the uneducated, instead of encouraging them to rise up and learn.
He'll be 75 in June of 2011. If we last beyond December of 2010.
ReplyDeleteIt's embarrassing to have a bishop say that "Catholics are too dumb" when he should be saying "I apologize for not having done my job properly in instructing my parishioners in the Catholic faith."
I know! And don't you think the Bishop was throwing a dig towards this ordained guy we know who has a blog?

ReplyDeleteWell golly gee - and all this time, liberal Catholics have been claiming how much more informed and intelligent the average Catholic is today compared to years ago...ie, pre-Vatican II. I guess stupidity is unvanquished after all.
ReplyDeleteIs this not just another form of the clericalism? Do we need condescending prelates to tell us we are too dumb to understand what an "ignominious gibbet" means? This is no different than the pre-Vatican II condescension that was supposed to have been eradicated, however the demon "Spirit of Vatican II" likes this sort of divisive stuff in the name of "inclusiveness". BTW, that other blog is no better, speaking of condescending clericalism, fat cigar ash and sauterne and carcioffi and all that. I don't need one to tell me what the menu really says, after all this mere specimen of the laity can read Italian and French too. We also have bird feeders where I live, can you imagine?
