The First Lady of Fashion

Shelley's meteoric rise.
.
Seriously.
.
The fashion industry made it clear at its annual awards ceremony Monday night that it's looking to future stars to see it past the doldrums of the recession, shunning longtime favorites and honoring a largely new guard: Rodarte, Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang — and Michelle Obama.
.
The Council of Fashion Designers of America's special tribute award went to the first lady, considered a new player in this world.

.
Noting her "meteoric rise as a fashion icon," CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg said Obama had "a unique look that balances the duality of her lives" in her roles as trusted adviser to her husband, President Barack Obama, and busy mother to their two daughters.

.
But it took host Tracey Ullman less than two minutes in her opening monologue to mention the new first lady of fashion. As complimentary as she was, though, Ullman, a Brit, did say Obama shouldn't have worn a cardigan to meet Queen Elizabeth II. - Fashion World Honors New Stars
.
The American fashion industry is officially dead.

  1. Only hypocrites could say that Michelle Obama is a fashion icon.
Honestly I would be embarrassed to get such a award if I were Mrs. President.
Frankly, Terry, You get the award for the prettiest zinnias. I am not a Democrat, so you know I am sincere.

  2. I think the country has officially gone insane.

ABC news as dropped all pretense of impartiality and has joined the staff.

Just about everybody is afraid of criticizing him.

Here's a guy running a neighborhood a couple of years ago and now they want him to run the world.

He's got more agendas than any president in history, and he still hasn't got one thing passed.

    His people worship him!

This guy fits the description of the anti-Christ.

    Pray hard!

  4. As my relatives in Noo Yawk would say "she's got too much junk in her trunk!"

  5. Larry - I tried - I only have paint to work with. The only reason I did it is because earlier in the day Drudge had a slightly different shot - more back end - then suddenly this PM they had a more 'flattering' shot - so I fixed it. I wonder if the WH said something?

  6. Ray - I could hardly believe the ABC News deal either. I'll never watch that network again.

"Trusted advisor to her husband" the president? I must've missed seeing her name on the ballot. I don't care how she dresses, any more than I cared about that with any of the First Ladies..tho' I did fall prey to/look alright in a pillbox hat and long white gloves, once..

We'll be working for Ron Paul for 2012. If there is a 2012.. and if we're still allowed to work for other candidates.. and allowed to vote..

More and more I am reminded of the story The Emperor's New Clothes. In this case, I suppose we have an empress with bad clothes.

I remember Jacqueline Kennedy -- she wouldn't be caught dead looking like that. I think Mrs. Obama should be nominated for "What Not to Wear" -- at the very least, Clinton and Stacy should "ambush" her and straighten her out, fashion-wise. I don't feel so bad about my own style (or lack thereof) any more. (Meow! Off to confession later this week...)

  10. I thought of Mrs. Kennedy too. I have to repeat that my real point with this post is the false flaterry of the fashion industry, as well as everyone's fear to say anything critical about Mrs. Obama's lack of taste. If Sarah Palin was the VP, and if Mrs. McCain was first lady - there would be waves of criticism and mockery concerning their wardrobe, hair, glasses, etc.

  11. Why is there this false flattery on the part of the Fashion Industry?

I know I'm often dense, so please explain it to me.

As far as her dressing: I think she should consider hiring someone OLDER as a stylist. I see a little too much 'youth' in her dressing.

She doesn't have to dress like a church lady, but bare arms are rarely flattering on most women past 30.

  12. Sarah Palin isn't the VP, and Letterman took care of the criticism and mockery last week - describing her as having the "s***** airline stewardess" look.

Maybe the fashion industry is bucking for a bailout!

  13. Lola - I think the designers are playing up to her - she is so not a fashion icon - in fact she dresses like any other executive woman in business - and that isn't always so great. I think her kids must pick out the clothes. She needs a real stylist. You'd think Oprah would have set her up with one of her people way back when.

Larry - designers are probably vying for her business.

  14. Terry, I thought her favorite boutique in Chicago handled her clothing; designers who wanted to dress her for the Inauguration had to go through someone at that boutique and she wears clothing designed by many young Chicago designers...my sister watches a reality show with designers do you suppose they had a competition to dress Michelle?
