A Miss USA contestant believes she lost the title because she said, "I think I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman." Does she think and therefore believe? Or does she just think she believes? Kidding.

At any rate, the judges and the audience did not like her response one bit. Miss California was simply responding to a question posed by blogger-turned-Louella Parsons-type-gossip-columnist, Perez Hilton regarding her stance on gay marriage. The question itself was obviously a set up, a propaganda tool for the promotion of gay marriage in California. However, the young lady did not fall for it and voiced her opinion - sounding and looking like a complete bimbo in the process - "I think I believe."

Yet who cares? What possible difference does the opinion of a beauty contestant make to the issue, much less that of an effeminate gossip monger asking dumb questions? Why am I even writing about this anyway? The whole thing is stupid. I apologize for being so trivial.

Oh! Oh! Oh! But why do women enter beauty pageants in the first place? I know - there is money in it, maybe scholarships, and career opportunities too - not unlike prostitution. But I doubt walking around in bikinis and lingerie and answering stupid questions does anything to elevate, much less honor the female sex.

Terry, I think you're being unfair. It took courage and character for her to speak up on that issue in an audience she KNEW was pro-gay (given the venue...most of the people who are fans of this are actually gay men.)
ReplyDeleteWhether it's a frivolous pursuit is not in question. The reality is that she is a light in the darkness that the judge tried to bring. And she's suffered for it.
She'll have more glory in heaven than I because of that defense alone. Most of us will never be given the opportunity to defend Truth in a venue such as that.

"Bathing suit" is simply another name for underwear. Women and men stroll the beaches in their underwear.

ReplyDeleteI remember watching one of the Miss USA pageants yonks and yonks ago. That year's Miss Delaware (if I remember correctly!) made a real impression on me when she had to answer a question about whether single mothers should get government subsidies--or something like that. Her megawatt smile disappeared and she nodded grimly before answering . . . in the negative.
Needless to say, she did not advance to the next level. I was too young to understand the politics behind the question, but even then I could tell that she was giving an unpopular answer--that she knew she was giving an unpopular answer--and that it cost her a shot at the crown.
Not that the loss of a beauty pageant tiara is that huge a deal, of course, but it takes real courage to get up in front of millions and say something that you know is not going to go down well with them.
Better to lose the temporary crown of a pageant than the eternal crown of life.
