Does someone really have to tell you?

Do parents have to be told their kids are fat?

DENVER – In an effort to combat the problem of childhood obesity, the Denver Public School District is sending home student health reports to keep parents informed. However, one parent says it should not have been sent home in her daughter's backpack because she read it.

"The part that upset her the most as she started reading it, there it stated that she was overweight and she started to cry saying, 'Mom, that school tells me I'm fat.' So, it was very heart wrenching," said Flaurette Martinez. - School sends home obesity notices on students.
This must mean the girl didn't know she was fat before the notice?

Of course she knows, she just doesn't want to admit it. It's hard to admit that which is painful & as plain as the dimples in your @ssets. Believe me, I know: I'm obese. Kids don't overeat just because they like the flavor of those cheese doodles. There's likely an underlying cause, and are not emotionally mature enough to recognize & deal with it. Parents needs to be more aware & TALK to their kids about what's going on w/them. I've fought my weight all my life & am finally beginning to love myself enough to parent myself & do what I must to live moderately, thoughtfully, healthfully. This poor kid. My mom is a cafeteria lady for an elementary school, and she says that while they do have some healthy options for kids, the school district still buys high-fat foods & snacks & of course the kids gobble it up.

  2. To have the school nurse send home a note that you were fat (just in case your classmates were too kind to inform you!), wouldn't that be the ultimate insult? I cried when I was in kindergarten and the nurse checked everybody for head lice. And it's a lot easier to deal with head lice than a weight problem!

  4. The daughter of someone I know almost developed anorexia because of the school tests done in Phys Ed on body fat. The kid wasn't obese at all, but developed a complex & obsessed over every bite... in fourth grade.

Then the schools sell fatty snacks, & cappucino in the MIDDLE SCHOOLS, because of course the kids become addicted & have to have it...

Our tax dollars, hard at work:p!!!

  5. You know, sometimes women do not realize they are fat... seriously. It is not until you see a picture of yourself and you say "why didn't anyone tell me I was fat!!"
Once I walk away from the mirror in the morning I forget what I look like... it is not until I walk past a store front window or the mirrored elevator doors shut that I am reminded how I look.
Life is hard... donuts are yummy.
Maybe the girl in your picture will see your post and say "Why didn't anyone tell me I was fat?"
Step away from the ice cream sister-step away.

  6. This definitely sounds like the Denver Public School system.

    I'm so glad I'm homeschooled.
