Well here is another one for the fashion police who insist upon proper clothing for Church. Now they are saying swimsuits cannot be worn into the Holy House at Ephesus in Turkey. Tourists have been visiting the sanctuary in swimsuits - I thought women had to be covered in Islamic countries anyway? The story here.

ReplyDeleteA few years ago, I visited the Virgin Mary's home outside of Ephesus in Selcuk. I think many tour groups in the area parade people through the place as one of the stops made when visiting Ephesus itself. Many people are in their casual walking/beach attire and only go here because the bus brings them. There were reverential pilgrims there too, most of them Muslims who revere the Blessed Mother. I must've been the only Catholic in the group I was in because everyone just aimlessly walked through the house (which is very, very tiny), while I knelt at one of the kneelers (how many times do you get to go to Our Lady's house!). It's almost like being in Notre Dame or other great religious sites, where people of other cultures and religions are busy talking, taking pictures and getting things for their scrapbook instead of understanding where they were at. BTW: Turkey is secular (government), but Muslim for all intents. I didn't see many women covered on the streets but all women were covered in the mosques (and in the back behind screens where the men wouldn't see them) unless they were tourists.

You'd be amazed at what women wear to church. Fr. Corapi once told a story about how he looked up from prayer one day and saw a woman in a bikini. He was at a church near the beach but that stunned him.
